Creative Writing Concentration
Mercyhurst College offers a creative writing concentration under the English major for students interested in a career as authors, editors, publishers, or other writing professions. The curriculum focuses on composing fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction.
An English major with a concentration in creative writing must take:
- Two 100-level courses in addition to the core:
- World Classics
- Western Classics
- British Classics
- American Classics
- Five 200-level preseminar courses, listed for the English major
- Four 300-level special topics seminars, one of which must be taken in contemporary literature
- Four designated courses as follows:
- Shakespeare
- History of Criticism or 20th Century Criticism
- One 300 level seminar elective
- Senior English project (a 20th century literature project)
- Three creative writing courses as follows:
- Introduction to Creative Writing
- Creative Writing - Fiction
- Creative Writing - Poetry
